I suffer from depression, and am currently going through a terribly rough patch. As you can imagine, the creativity isn’t flowing quite as easily as it has in the past, and, for at least the next couple of months, I REALLY need to focus my energy on getting me better.

This doesn’t mean I’m not full of plans for what next, but ideas for future work are on the back burner, bubbling away steadily.

Jerwood Makers Open!

The Jerwood Makers Open has given me the opportunity to create larger sculptural works with an interactive facet: elements that light up, vibrate or move when the spectator approaches, touches or handles the work. The installation of the work accentuates the audience’s sense of discovering awe-inspiring, exotic creatures. I am particularly interested in the concept that the works are only complete in the audience’s presence.

Jerwood Makes Open

I am very excited to have been selected for the Jerwood Makers Open. Four artists, including myself, ceramic artist Emmanuel Boos, glassmaker Heike Brachlow and installation artist Keith Harrison have been awarded an equal share of £30,000 to create new work, which will go on display as part of the JVA programme at the Jerwood Space in July.

I am really excited as this gives me the opportunity to create larger interactive sculptural works, and really defy the boundaries of what is possible with technologies like rapid prototyping. I intend to create artefacts that depend on audience participation to reach their full potential. Designing the interactive element will be a significant challenge, taking my practice to a new level, in terms of both audience experience and technical expertise.

I had fabulous feedback from customers so far, and the magnetic brooches have been very popular. With this in mind, I’ve been busy in the studio, designing some variations. All the backs in the series are interchangable, and I’ve even created a smaller brooch, as eye catchingly bold as ever, and easier on the wallet.

My work

My work explores the impact of new technologies on human relationships with material culture.

I am motivated by the concept that postmodern technologies often result in the manifestation of identity as a fluid entity. I aim to allow the user to convey this changing individuality through participation in the design process.

Another thread that runs through my practice is the exploration of the potential of CAD, haptics and rapid prototyping processes to create entirely new forms based on nature; subverting a process that is fundamentally mathematical to create objects that appear to be completely organic.

These ideas are expressed through a series of organic rapid prototyped forms incorporating various technologies; often objects are constructed from modular units that allow the wearer to manipulate and transform the adornment as their sense of self changes.
